settle down (1) Meaning: to become calm and quiet, especially after being excited or noisy Synonym: calm down, quieten down For example: Whenever the kids got too noisy,  their teacher would tell them to settle down  and get on with their work. If my dog gets excited and starts barking,  I go out and cuddle her  and I can usually settle her down.
